SOUTH AFRICA: Building on the EThekwini Maritime Cluster’s (EMC) previous training programme, the Cluster partnered with Sandock Austral Shipyards (SAS) to launch a six-week training initiative for 10 boatbuilding beneficiaries in Durban this month. 

NIGERIA: Representing a ninth order with the French shipbuilder, the Nigerian Navy has renewed it’s connection with Ocea with an order for the design and manufacture of a fleet of patrol boats consisting of 14 vessels.

GHANA: Experts from the Maritime Just Transition Task Force told Africa’s maritime leaders in Accra yesterday that their continent was well placed to take a large share of the new jobs and training places expected from shipping’s green transition.

SOMALIA: A new national action plan for enhancing and empowering Somali women in their country’s maritime sector was launched this week at a high-level event bringing together senior government officials and representatives from civil society and the international community, including the United Nations.

SOUTH AFRICA: Following the closure of some fisheries close to penguin colonies last year, the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has appointed an international panel of experts with representation from USA, Argentina, Australia and the UK to advise on the management of interactions between the small pelagic (anchovy and sardines) fishery and the conservation of African penguins.

SOUTH AFRICA: The South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), South African Maritime Authority (SAMSA) and the Oceana Maritime Academy, hosted a three day Integrated Small Scale Fisheries Empowerment Training Programme in Port Alfred.
