Celebrating women in the South African maritime industry

Annual conference and awards highlight challenges and successes

SOUTH AFRICA: The annual conference and awards evening hosted by the South African International Maritime Institute last week not only highlighted the continued need to address the position of women in the local maritime industry, but also showcased some significant achievements.

Held under the theme, Taking up the Baton, it was interesting to note that while experiences of women who have been in the industry for more than two decades differs markedly from those entering into the sector, there are still some challenges that remain unchanged.

Those with a longer history in the maritime industry noted that they were significantly outnumbered and often discriminated against for daring to enter a male-dominated industry.

“The biases still exist and there are still limitations (for women). Yet it is our collective responsibility to undo all the barriers that we can and open the space for more participation,” said Siphokazi Ndudane from the Office of the Premier of the Eastern Cape and former DDG within the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in her keynote address.

Including doctors, professors, industry leaders and entrepreneurs, the line-up of speakers on the programme showcased the level of experience and expertise that women have achieved across the maritime sub-sectors.

It also created a varied and robust content delivery that included input on the use of aquatic plants to treat TB, stories of success from the fishing sector, the impact of killer whales on the white shark population, the potential of coastal tourism and so much more.

Awards acknowledge women’s contributions

Later, at the Imbokodo in Maritime Awards dinner, ten categories underlined the diversity of success stories from across the maritime sub-sectors. Guests were also mesmerised by a keynote address from Kirsten Neuschäfer – the only women and South African to win the Golden Globe Solo Yacht race.

With photos and footage from the race, Neuschäfer received a well-deserved standing ovation and proved that women are just as suited for epic ocean adventures as men.

5. Community Impact Award: Mpho Monyane, Maritime EmpowerHer
6. Safety Advocate Award: AMSOL steered by Clementine Dlamini
7. Global Ambassador Award: Colleen Jacka, Maritime Review Africa
8. Innovation Award: Thandeka Tembe, SAIMI
9. Outstanding Policy Advocate Award: Nontsikelelo Mbono, DFFE
10. Maritime Sport & Recreation Award: Zandile Ndlovu, The Black Mermaid
