Allocation for small-scale fishers increased

DFFE aims to boost local economies

SOUTH AFRICA: Small-scale fishers will benefit from a 36% increase allocation in certain fish species in a move that the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) believes will help boost local economies and empower fishing communities.

Minister Dr Dion George announced the increase yesterday as part of government initiatives to address socio-economic obstacles in coastal areas while ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources for future generations.

The move will provide small-scale fishers with greater access to marine resources in an effort to promote business growth and create jobs at harbours.

Minister George highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “This 36% increase in fish allocations for own use is about improving livelihoods, empowering fishing communities, and stimulating economic activity in our coastal regions. By supporting small-scale fishers, we’re ensuring that they become central players in driving local development and sustainability.”

A statement issued by the DFFE, emphasises their objective of reinvigorating coastal harbours as hubs of economic activity.
