Merchant Shipping Bill published for comment

Public comments close 25 October 2024

SOUTH AFRICA: Introduced to the National Assembly in May last year, the Merchant Shipping Bill has been published by the Minister of Transport for comment.

The Bill provides for the registration, permitting, and licensing of ships and the establishment and operation of a shipping information centre in the country. It also outlines the marine traffic regulations and aims to incorporate into domestic law, international conventions.

Providing for the application of labour laws for seafarers, the Bill includes conditions of employment of seafarers and the health and well-being of seafarers on board a vessel. 

As an overarching piece of legislation that impacts on most aspects of the maritime industry, stakeholders are encouraged to navigate the document and submit their comments by the deadline of 25 October.
