Exciting lineup for African conference

WISTA Africa conference

SOUTH AFRICA: With a full line-up planned for the 7th WISTA Africa Conference being held in Cape Town next month, delegates will benefit from both regional as well as international expert input that will highlight issues around training, legislation, collaboration as well as diversity, equity and inclusion within the maritime space.

WISTA International’s President, Elpi Petraki will deliver the keynote address during the opening plenary which will also feature an address from the organisation’s secretary, Jemilat Mahamah from Ghana.

The conference will see the launch of the South African chapter of the African Shipowners Association (ASA). The conceptualisation of the ASA was first introduced in 2012 at a conference in Ghana – and was established to create a platform for shipowners and operators on the African continent.

The Secretary General of ASA, Funmi Folorunso, will be attending the WISTA Africa Conference to initiate the formation of the South African chapter.

A highlight of the programme is the inclusion of a second keynote address by Ambassador Nancy Karigithu, the Blue Economy advisor to the President of Kenya. Formulating and implementing policies and strategies that promote the sustainable development and management of Kenya's marine resources and coastal areas, Karigithu has amassed an impressive reputation as an expert in maritime affairs.

She stood as the only African candidate for the position of Secretary General of the International Maritime Organisation in 2023.

With a lineup that includes topical panel discussions as well as an opportunity to explore Cape Town and significant networking opportunities, attendance is certainly not restricted to WISTA members.
