Fatalities in fishing vessel incident

Four die in fishing vessel incident

SOUTH AFRICA: A search for a missing fisher got underway this morning after four crew members died during an incident that left the fishing boat, Dijaanda, stranded on rocks near Mossel Bay.

According to reports from the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), another fishing vessel, Vuna Elisa, responded when the Dijaanda transmitted a distress call and the NSRI initiated a coastal search.

It was the NSRI that managed to locate the vessel stranded on the rocks and successfully rescued the crew members on board. Of the seven crew members, four had already died, one was injured, and another was found to be missing.

"The NSRI teams stationed in Mossel Bay and Stilbaai launched a search and rescue operation for the missing crew member at 7:30 am today this morning and further updates are expected from SAMSA in due course.
