SA Agulhas II welcomes members of the public
Step aboard South Africa’s state-of-the-art polar research and supply vessel – the SA Agulhas II – as she opens her decks to the public for one day only in Durban! This flagship environmental outreach event is hosted by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and brings together science, adventure, and education for the whole family.
The Open Day is designed to inspire curiosity, promote marine conservation, and celebrate South Africa’s contributions to Antarctic and ocean research. Highlights Include:
Guided Tours of the SA Agulhas II
Explore key parts of the vessel, including the bridge, laboratories, living quarters, and helicopter deck. Learn how this ice-strengthened ship supports scientists in some of the world’s most extreme environments.
Interactive Exhibitions
Meet marine biologists, climatologists, and conservationists! Visit hands-on displays from universities and environmental organisations. Touch real specimens, explore scientific instruments, and discover new research.
Talks & Presentations
Hourly informal talks and story sessions on stage. Hear about life aboard the ship, ocean wildlife, Antarctic missions, and exciting careers in marine science.
