SOUTH AFRICA: The annual conference and awards evening hosted by the South African International Maritime Institute last week not only highlighted the continued need to address the position of women in the local maritime industry, but also showcased some significant achievements.

SIERRA LEONE: Local artisanal fishermen received fishing equipment to help boost catches during the fishing season in the coastal fisheries.

Governments and industry are being urged to participate in the second Women in Maritime Survey to help gather important baseline data about women’s participation in the maritime and ocean fields.

GHANA: Having identified the urgent need to improve measures to monitor and protect aquatic biodiversity in during a scoping mission to Benin, Liberia and Nigeria last year, the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) has received new equipment from the African Union Interafrican Bureau on Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) on behalf of its Member States.

SOUTH AFRICA:  Having initiated the construction of a solar system in November last year, Aqunion is currently undertaking testing ahead of commissioning the solution which aims to combat the rising cost of electricity and mitigate threats of loadshedding.  

SEYCHELLES: The decision to extend the moratorium on chartering and importing small-scale longline fishing vessels for a further two years was approved at last week’s Cabinet meeting.

ANGOLA: Azule Energy, Angola’s largest independent energy company, has embarked on a project to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV) fleet by up to 10 percent.
