College seeks additional accreditation

TANZANIA: The Dar es Salaam Maritime Training Academy (DMTA) has requested accreditation to teach basic maritime courses as part of the country’s impetus to increase basic skills in the maritime transport sector.

The Tanzania Shipping Agency (TASAC) through the Director General who is also the Registrar of Seafarers, Mohamed Salum, undertook an inspection of the infrastructure and teaching and learning facilities at the Academy (DMTA) located in Dar Es Salaam.

The country's maritime industry has received new impetus from the private sector to establish colleges to increase basic skills in maritime transport.

Salum said that, in Tanzania, there is a large group of young people who, if they take advantage of the opportunity to join DMTA, will help build a new journey in their lives.

“Tanzania has seas and lakes which if used well will contribute to increasing employment for young people and reducing unemployment. Congratulations to the DMTA leadership for establishing this college, also, I call on Tanzanians who have the capacity to establish such colleges to come forward and establish such colleges in the areas of Lake Victoria, Tanganyika and others,” he said.

The academy will present short courses and will be run on curricula that meets the guidelines of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as well as the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW)1978 as amended.
