MOB incident results in three confirmed fatalities

Two seafarers still missing

SOUTH AFRICA: The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has issued a statement in relation to the fatal incident onboard the Umkhuseli, confirming that a preliminary enquiry is underway.

Information indicates that the incident began when a crew member reportedly fell overboard while working on deck. In response, a Fast Rescue Boat (FRB) carrying four crew members was launched to initiate a recovery operation.

According to the SAMSA statement, the FRB subsequently capsized resulting in a total of five persons becoming lost overboard. Although three bodies have been recovered, two persons remain missing at the conclusion of a Search and Recovery (SAR) operation.

The SAR operation was instituted as soon as crew members notified Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) Cape Town. Vessels in the vicinity were diverted to assist with the search, while rescue efforts were supported by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the South African Police Services (SAPS) water wings and helicopter resources.

In a separate statement issue by vessel owners, AMSOL, Chief Executive Officer, Dan Ngakane confirmed that the family members of the crew members have been notified.

“It is with a deep sense of sadness that we confirm the passing of three of our much loved and respected colleagues. We have been in direct contact with the families of all five affected seafarers since yesterday and are providing them with support and regular updates as confirmed information becomes available. Our thoughts are with family members, loved ones and the entire AMSOL community during this extremely challenging time,” he said.

AMSOL confirms that onboard safety protocols were activated as soon as the incident occurred while the vessel was undertaking standby operations near the FA Platform.

According to industry sources attending the launch of Transport Month in Johannesburg, the Minister of Transport, Barabra Creecy acknowledged the tragedy and called for a moment of silence to honour the deceased.

The vessel is contracted to the Department of Transport as the official Emergency Towing Vessel.
