Deadline looms to comment on port plans

TNPA calls for public comments

SOUTH AFRICA: Port stakeholders have until 22 April to submit comments on the proposed 2022 Port Development Framework plans that were released last month. The 160 page document includes all eight commercial ports as well as Port Nolloth.

In addition to the customary maritime sectors usually included in the framework, the plans also include details relating to accommodating renewable energy.

The Port Development Framework Plans (PDFPs) were updated in 2022 using a methodology that included the:

  • Revision of the nationwide freight demand forecast was developed per port.
  • Scenarios and port concepts were developed to handle the projected freight demand.

In addition, an options analysis was conducted to determine the most suitable port concepts to meet future demand. Options were selected and prepared into high level plans.

The following were considered during the update of the PDFPs.

  •  Opportunities and constraints identified in the previous PDFPs.
  • Alignment with international trends.
  • Alignment with national strategies and policies developed as part of the PDFPs project.
  • Spatial Planning and Land Use Management guidelines.
  • Investment prospects

In the short-term the largest investment will occur in Richards Bay and Durban. Several berth upgrades, and deepening projects are planned for the Port of Durban, including the development of the Port into a regional container hub.
