This year’s Smith Memorial Lecture, titled “From Specimens to Systems: Reimagining Aquatic Science for a Changing World,” will reflect on how the practice of aquatic science has changed over time. Drawing on a career that began with zooplankton and larval fish in the lakes of Wisconsin and later expanded across reservoir fisheries, hydroacoustics, ecological modelling, South African rivers, macroinvertebrates, estuaries, temporary wetlands, and ocean and coastal science leadership, Dr Schael will explore the evolution of the field.

The Annual Smith Memorial Lecture will take place from 11:00–13:00 on 10 November 2026 at the NRF-SAIAB Lecture Room and online.
