IMRF welcomes Cameroon

CAMEROON: Cameroon Lifesaving as joined the network of maritime search and rescue organisations represented within the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF).

This dedicated team, led by its founder and President Idrisse Tchokona, brings a powerful commitment to water safety and drowning prevention across Central Africa. “We are on a mission to cultivate a culture of safety around water," says Tchokona. "Every life saved, and every person trained is a victory.”

Tchokona started his career in maritime safety as a Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) safety diver and a sea survival trainer, sparking his strong passion for protecting lives in water. Motivated by his goal to create a meaningful difference, he founded Cameroon Lifesaving, an organisation focused on training, preparedness, and a mission to prevent drownings and teach lifesaving skills to communities in urgent need.

Cameroon Lifesaving runs a variety of programmes, including public awareness campaigns, school education sessions, and certified training in first aid, sea survival, water rescue, diving, and SAR operations. Their efforts are community-focused, ensuring that knowledge and skills are accessible to both professionals and everyday citizens. According to Tchokona, “Training is essential to our organisation. It enables our members to respond effectively to emergencies and save lives. It’s the foundation of everything we do.”

Despite facing operational challenges such as limited funding, equipment shortages, and a need for broader public awareness, the organisation continues to make a profound impact. One such example came during a local swimming competition, where a young swimmer began to drown. Thanks to the quick response of a lifeguard trained by Cameroon Lifesaving, the swimmer was rescued. It was a powerful reminder of the value of preparedness and the importance of having trained personnel on hand.

Volunteers play a vital role in the organisation’s operations, supporting training activities, participating in awareness efforts, and responding to emergencies. Cameroon Lifesaving works hard to create a motivating and inclusive environment where volunteers are recognised and empowered.

“To young people, I say this: joining Cameroon Lifesaving offers a unique chance to make a difference,” Tchokona emphasises. “You’ll acquire important skills, become part of a supportive community, and contribute to saving lives. Your dedication can leave a lasting impact.”

Joining the IMRF represents a significant milestone for Cameroon Lifesaving. Through this global community, they now gain access to international training opportunities, shared knowledge, and collaborative partnerships that can help them expand their efforts.

“We joined the IMRF to benefit from its network and expertise,” says Tchokona. “Collaboration through the IMRF is essential to improving rescue and water safety services. Together, we can develop innovative solutions and reach more people.”

As the lead department in developing the Ocean Economy Master Plan, it should be cause for alarm that the OEMP was not mentioned in the Portfolio Committee meeting in April to discuss the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment's five year plan.
