BUILDING SOUTH AFRICA'S REAL-TIME COASTAL OBSERVATION NETWORK

SAEON & STS Webinar

Learn how SAEON & STS deploy Spotter Platforms along South Africa’s coast to better detect, understand, and predict environmental change.

DATE: 18 June 2025
VENUE:  Virtual
FORMAT: Webinar
COST: N/A

Join the webinar with Dr. Tommy Bornman (South African Environmental Observation Network - SAEON), André Hoek (Sea Technology Services - STS), and Jasmine Eggleton (Sofar). The panelists will detail how SAEON & STS deploy Spotter Platforms along South Africa’s coast to collect real-time surface and subsurface data to better detect, understand, and predict environmental change.

Tommy, André, and Jasmine will discuss how SAEON and STS:

  • Deploy Spotters at scale in key locations along South Africa’s rugged coastline to make real-time observations of waves, subsurface temperature, dissolved oxygen, and other key variables.
  • Leverage the Bristlemouth open connectivity standard to integrate Spotter with custom thermistor strings to profile the thermocline in real time.
  • Combine real-time Spotter data with observations from other platforms to rapidly expand coastal monitoring efforts and climate resilience across South Africa.
