Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Fishing Authority

SEYCHELLES: With over 27 years’ experience in marine science and a focus on fisheries research and governance, fish behavioural ecology, socio-ecological systems and climate change, Dr Jan Robinson has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA), effective from the 16th October, 2023.

Dr Robinson has a PhD in Coral Reef Studies from the James Cook University, in Australia, an MSc in Applied Marine Science from the University of Plymouth, in UK and a BSc in Marine Biology from the University of Wales, Swansea in UK.  

Prior to his appointment as CEO, Dr Robinson previously managed research at SFA between 2001 and 2011, Project Manager of the Shared Growth Project (SWIOFish3) and Coordinator of a Fishery Improvement Project for the Indian Ocean Tuna purse seine fishery. 

He has also published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as producing scientific advice for policy makers and marine resource users; and has volunteered in chairing scientific bodies of regional fisheries management organisations.

He succeeds Philippe Michaud.

20 May 2026 PROTECTING OUR FISHERIES FROM DISASTER of monofilament nets: a regional call for action 5/20/2026 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Monofilament nets are widely prohibited for fishing in SADC countries due to their destructive ecological and socio-economic impacts. Made of clear nylon, these nets are nearly invisible underwater. They are non-selective, non-biodegradable and, as the material tears easily, they are often discarded after only a few uses, creating large amounts of plastic pollution.
