WISTA-SA AGM hails in new committee

Change of leadership for WISTA-SA

SOUTH AFRICA: After a successful first four years since its relaunch in the country, Women in Shipping and Trading Association – South Africa saw a change in leadership at last night’s Annual General Meeting held in Cape Town.

Having weathered the challenges facing a new association as well as those added by a global pandemic, WISTA-SA owes much of its success to the tireless efforts of Clare Gomes who took up the mantle to relaunch the organisation.

Now, one of the premier industry associations in the country, WISTA-SA continues to attract interest from professional and associate members who benefit from mentorship programmes, training initiatives, networking opportunities and a solid support base.

That the outgoing office bearers have endeavoured to ensure continuity by being able to draw in strong new leadership is testimony to the culture of collaboration that exists within the organisation. The new executive committee that has been tasked with taking WISTA-SA forward includes:

  • Amsha Gengan (Chairperson)
  • Berenice Fillmore
  • Luluma Mthemba
  • Vanessa Naidoo

Although unable to attend last night’s meeting, outgoing chair – Clare Gomes’ address were tabled on her behalf in which she acknowledged the efforts of her team as well as their unique contributions to ensuring the success of the young association.

Current members of the association are also active on a number of WISTA International Committees:

  • Clare Gomes: Nominations Committee
  • Ann Pletschke: Innovation and Technology Committee
  • Lenore Oosthuizen: Trade Committee
  • Hermoine Manuel: Environmental Committee

Incoming chairperson, Amsha Gengan said, “Together we can work torwards a more informed and engaged network to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for both WISTA South Africa and its members in the maritime industry both locally and internationally.”

Highlighting the importance of working for equity within the industry, she emphasised the need for targeted interventions. “As a network of strong women working together, we can create an industry that is not only diverse and inclusive, but also equitable where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

She also called on members to enlist the support of men and create allies within the industry. “I urge you to ensure you use every opportunity to partner with men in your organisation and bring them along on this journey with us. When everyone has a seat at the table and when they are valued for their uniwue perspectives and experiences, great things happen,” she said.
