Pilot project collects data on electrification potential for port

Promoting progression to decarbonisation

EGYPT: The addition of an electric Reach Stacker (eRS) at the Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) will act as a pilot over the course of the next few months with the goal of advancing the electrification of terminal operations across the industry.

APM Terminals has entered into an agreement with Kalmar to supply an electric Reach Stacker (eRS) to be piloted at Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) and the parties will work together to collect data and insights from this pilot.

“Electrification is one of the cornerstones of our decarbonisation vision, and this pilot is an opportunity to accelerate the maturity and adoption of electric equipment. We are aiming to gain important insights into technical aspects of the equipment, infrastructure requirements, and operational implications,” said Keld Mosgaard Christensen, Chief Executive Officer of SCCT

APM Terminals has made a commitment to be net zero by 2040, and SCCT will play an important role in building and strengthening APM Terminal’s organizational capabilities and readiness for operating electric equipment as part of the USD 60 million global electrification pilot program, announced last year.

The investment in electric equipment supports APM Terminals’ global strategy aiming to reduce, replace and decarbonise to reach net zero by 2040 and supports the terminal operator’s engagement for that in the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA) that was founded at COP28.
