New gala event added to maritime calendar

First Hall of Fame Inductees to be named

SOUTH AFRICA: Taking inspiration from similar international events, the local chapter of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) is hosting the inaugural South African Shipping Gala in November this year at the Durban International Convention Centre.

“I drew inspiration from the London Event, Greek Shipping Hall of Fame and the Liverpool Marine Engineers and Naval Architects Guild,” says ICS Chairman and CEO of Linsen Nambi Bunker Services, Durand Naidoo.

With the aim of building relationships within the sector, Naidoo believes that such an event should take prime position within Durban’s maritime calendar.

“We do not have an existing event of this nature for the shipping industry and Durban, as a smart port, should host what will become an annual event,” he adds.

ICS has joined forces with the Moses Kotane Institute, the South African Association of Ship Operators and Agents (SAASOA) as well as the eThekwini Maritime Cluster to draw on the networks that exist within South Africa and particularly Durban.

“We all share the same goal which is to grow the maritime industry,” says Naidoo.

The evening will also include the induction of two prominent and influential leaders into the Shipping Hall of Fame as well as live entertainment.  Naidoo confirms that hosts will use the opportunity to raise funds for a donation to the SAPS Charity.

The black tie event has already attracted sponsorship from Sandock Austral Shipyards, MSC and Linsen Nambi Bunker Services, and looks forward to a sell-out on the allocated tables which can be purchased by companies.

Still in the process of encouraging additional sponsors, Naidoo outlines some of the marketing benefits associated with supporting the event: “Sponsors can expect significant brand visibility within the maritime sector, both during and after the event. In addition to branding, there will be extensive networking opportunities with industry leaders, offering a valuable platform for relationship building, business development, and partnership exploration.”
