Energy Observer interacts with public in Port of Cape Town

Welcoming cleaner message to shipping

SOUTH AFRICA: After docking at the V&A Waterfront, the Energy Observer, coupled to their mobile expo, will engage with the public in a week-long stay to promote the work being undertaken by the team in moving shipping towards its goals of becoming greener.

The vessel, which was launched in France in 2017, is the brainchild of former merchant mariner and competitive sailor, Victorien Frussard after experiencing a loss of power while sailing. Realising that he was surrounded by available energy sources he was also struck by the fact that he had no way of tapping into them.

The concept of a boat powered by wind and sun was born and Frussard set out on a mission to collaborate with likeminded partners.

Now some six years after the launch of the Ocean Energy, the team has their sights set on a second vessel. This time, however, they plan to develop a small cargo vessel that embodies the same ethos as their recreational vessel by adopting a zero-emission goal for a 1,200 ton container vessel capable of carrying just over 1,000 TEU.

The small expo, which is currently open at Jetty 2 in the V&A Waterfront, will run until Sunday with a daily programme of short documentaries.
