Nominations open for women championing the maritime agenda

Process to identify the women moving the maritime industry kicks off with an invitation to nominate.

SOUTH AFRICA: After announcing the partnership to establish an annual list of Top South African Women in Maritime last month, the process to identify candidates in now formally underway.

The initiative was conceptualised by Mpho Monyane, founder of Maritime EmpowerHer who approached Maritime Review Africa to consider a partnership.

With the aim of compiling an inclusive list that draws from every corner of the maritime community, the initial process will provide an opportunity for members of the maritime industry to nominate worthy candidates.

The public nomination period will remain open until 17 July 2026, giving everyone ample opportunity to identify ideal candidates for consideration. Nominations will be accepted from across the maritime industry as well as from within the public, private and civil society spaces. The aim is to ensure that women contributing in less visible roles receive the same consideration as those in more prominent positions.

Although the process to compile the final list of top women will include this public nomination opportunity, the aim is to simultaneously research and identify women who may not find themselves nominated.

Each candidate will be assessed against a structured judging framework that uses a fair and transparent metric system by a panel of judges that will be announced shortly.

In addition, as conveners of the list, Maritime Review Africa and EmpowerHer reserve the right to increase or decrease the number of women ultimately included on the inaugural Top South African Women in Maritime list.
