RTG delivery to boost port efficiency

Large order for port efficiency

GHANA: Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS) has taken delivery of a large order of 16 electric Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes at Tema Port in an ongoing effort to boost port efficiencies and position the terminal as a strategic gateway in West Africa.

The heavy-lift vessel RAM COMMANDER, a tactical project cargo carrier, docked at MPS Terminal 3, delivered the eye-catching cargo, marking the next phase of operational expansion. The arrival created a striking scene along the Tema coastline, drawing the attention of local communities and the port business ecosystem alike.

This development forms part of a broader capacity upgrade programme aimed at meeting growing trade demand and reinforcing MPS’s position as a leading logistics hub in the region.

The momentum continues with the imminent arrival of the ultra-heavy carrier ZHENHUA 32, a strategic infrastructure vessel transporting three additional Ship-to-Shore (STS) gantry cranes. Once deployed, these assets will increase the terminal’s annual handling capacity to 3 million TEUs.

The newly delivered eRTGs will be deployed in the container yard as part of Phase 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project, recently commissioned by President John Dramani Mahama. This phase underscores MPS’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure that meets global port standards.

This investment supports MPS’s strategic objectives to enhance operational efficiency, facilitate trade and industrial growth, reduce the cost of doing business, and strengthen Tema Port’s role as a regional hub for transit and transshipment.

“This milestone reflects our relentless focus on continuous improvement and operational excellence. The addition of these advanced eRTGs, alongside the incoming STS cranes, significantly enhances our capacity to serve our customers with greater efficiency and reliability,” notes Mohamed Samara, CEO of MPS.

MPS is operated as a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Africa Global Logistics (AGL), and APM Terminals, combining local expertise, regional experience, and global best practices to deliver sustainable, efficient, and world-class port operations. This latest expansion further underscores the shareholders’ shared commitment to driving growth, facilitating trade, and strengthening the Port of Tema’s position as West Africa’s leading container terminal.
