Ghana works to secure seatime for graduates

Seeking a global competitive market for Ghanaian cadets

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) participated in the Seatrade Maritime Crew Connect Global Conference, working to secure vital sea time opportunities for Ghana’s talented, but unemployed, maritime graduates.

The Authority is determined to address the massive shortfall in available berths to cadets graduating from the Regional Maritime University annually. Each year some 300 cadets aim to secure the practical experience needed to start their careers, but less than a third will successfully find a cadet berth.

Now GMA is committed to positioning Ghana’s cadets as a strategically valuable and cost-effective crewing source due to the country’s close proximity to Europe and is using the international conference held over the past week to seek partnerships.

In line with its new strategic direction of partnership, development and ownership, the GMA is positioning Ghana's cadets as a This is a crucial step to giving our seafarers a competitive advantage in the global market.

“The conference, which gathered ship management companies, crewing agencies, and shipping service providers, is serving as a vital platform for the GMA to address a major challenge of the severe lack of practical experience for graduates facing Ghana’s seafarer industry,” the Authority said in a statement online, adding that their attendance at the conference will give them a “competitive advantage in the global market”.
