Curbing harmful dust in port

Fogging units installed in Port of Mombasa

KENYA: Two new mist blower fogging units have been installed at the Port of Mombasa to curb harmful dust emissions during bulk cargo operations.

The pilot project, is part of Kenya Port Authority’s (KPA) broader Green Port Policy, aimed to protect the health of port workers, users as well as safeguard the environment.

The mist blower system targets dust from materials such as clinker, coal, and gypsum, which can pose risks to people, equipment, water and air quality, as well as the surrounding vegetation.

The dust suppression units have been stationed along Berths 9 and 10 and will work alongside existing eco-hoppers to reduce the spread of fine particles during cargo discharge.

According to General Manager Infrastructure Development Engineer Mathew Amuti, this is part of KPA's commitment to environmental stewardship and to maintaining high operational standards that align with global best practices.

The Authority plans to monitor the system’s performance before considering a wider rollout across the port.
