Navy aims to strengthen women in leadership

Leadership course for professional development

KENYA: The Women Leadership Development Course (WLDC), an initiative by the Kenya Navy and funded by the Danish Government through the Kenya-Denmark Cooperation under the Gender Pillar, is currently underway at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC).

This five-day activity aims to design a comprehensive WLDC curriculum tailored to the professional development needs of women military officers and service members of the Kenyan Defence Force with pilot programme to be undertaken within the Kenya Navy.

The process is being facilitated by IPSTC, leveraging its expertise in curriculum design and capacity building in peace and security training, as well as incorporating Gender and Leadership SMES and Kenya Navy Officers providing the military context of leadership.

The inclusion and participation of women in Security Sector Institutions – particularly at strategic and decision-making levels – are essential for achieving sustainable peace and effective security outcomes. The WLDC initiative is a key step toward enhancing gender equity and promoting leadership opportunities for women in the military.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Chief of Personnel Kenya Navy Colonel Nandasava emphasised the importance of the curriculum development process, stating, “The objective is to design a curriculum that addresses the needs of the Kenya Navy and the broader Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).”

The Head of Research Department IPSTC, Colonel C Lagat reaffirmed the professionalism and expertise of the IPSTC Curriculum Design Department, assuring stakeholders of a high-quality, effective, and responsive curriculum that will support the long-term development of women leaders within the KDF.
