SAMSA conducts refresher workshops

Concluding a national series of refresher workshops, the South African Maritime Safety Authority has appointed 85 external examiners and trained over 100 personnel after audit findings highlighted the need for standardised examination practices among SAMSA-accredited skipper training institutions.

Led by Tendani Rodney Mukhithi, with support from Vusumuzi Dube, the workshops were held in Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria with the aim of  reinforcing small vessel examination standards and enhancing maritime safety across the country.

Acknowledging the impact of human error in maritime incidents, the authority is calling on all examiners to stay proactive ahead of the boating season and commit to uphold the highest standards of competency and safety.

Looking ahead, SAMSA remains committed to continuous improvement in examiner oversight through audits, targeted training, and an enhanced support framework - with the possibility of an online theoretical training portal for Regulation 37 vessels in development.
