Fisheries management high on agenda

Council meeting focuses on fishing sector

ANGOLA: A Presidential Decree to maximise the country’s national fish production and boost food security as well as encourage job creation has been approved by the Economic Committee of the Council of Ministers.

The Decree approves measures to operationalise and revitalise aquaculture over the next two years. The document aims to promote the development of infrastructure to support aquaculture; train and continuously monitor producers; facilitate commercialisation and market access; structure the supply chain as well as encourage local production of inputs.

Furthermore, it aims to formalise informal aquaculture farmers and improve data management in the sector.

The Committee also considered the Presidential Decree approving the Management Measures for Marine Fisheries, Continental Fisheries, Aquaculture and Salt for the year ahead.

This aims to ensure a balance between the exploration and conservation of aquatic biological resources; promote sustainable aquaculture and increase salt production and its quality.

Finally, the Economic Committee of the Council of Ministers also assessed the Presidential Decree approving the Fishing Fleet Management Measures to adapt the capacity of licensed vessels to the biological, economic and social challenges that currently affect the country's fishing sector.

The measures will also establish a balance between fishing capacity and the sustainability of fishery resources, to prevent overcapacity and promote responsible and sustainable fishing.
