Port leases open opportunities for maritime companies

More leases on offer

SOUTH AFRICA: Over the last few months, Transnet National Ports Authority has extended calls for companies interested in leasing premises across the Port of Richard’s Bay, the Port of Durban, the Port of Port Nolloth, the Port of Cape Town and, most recently, the Port of Mossel Bay.

The deadline to submit proposals for the land parcels in the Port of Cape Town closed at the beginning of this week and represented some prime locations including a significant number of premises within the area adjacent to the Sturrock Dry Dock.

Some of these buildings represent the heyday of the marine repair sector in Cape Town having played hosts to iconic names such as Dorbyl Marine, Globe Marine and EBH. Long term plans for the Port of Cape Town (beyond 2052) highlight ambitions to grow the marine engineering sector with Small Craft Basin earmarked to be filled to provide additional area for the sector.

The large facility near the Paarden Island gate that was previously occupied by Nautic is also amongst the list of potential new homes for companies seeking a footprint within the port precinct.

TNPA is looking for proposals that stipulate how the premises will be used to support the port business. Business plans, which form part of the submission requirements, need to highlight the company’s track record in the industry; predicted cashflow as well as their forward vision for innovation.

Interested companies also need to submit a plan for job creation and skills development within their bids.
