SAMSA board reconstituted

Cabinet announces new board members

SOUTH AFRICA: Only two of the SAMSA board members appointed by Cabinet at the end of August 2023 for a period of three years remain on the list released after last week’s Cabinet meeting despite a full year remaining on their tenure.

Most notable is the absence of Mahesh Fakir  and Tau Morwe who led the board as Chair and Deputy Chair respectively. Advocate Vusumzi Sihawu will now step into the top position and will be supported by Mervyn Burton as the Vice Chair.

Sihawu is an Advocate in the High Court, but has also previously worked as an environmental specialist for Transnet National Ports Authority. Burton, who is an accountant and strategic business advisor has served on several boards including the National Financial Ombud Scheme and CapeNature.

According to an announcement following his appointment to CapeNature in 2015, Burton has general and financial experience in various industries including fishing. They are joined by Dr Owen Peter Muller Horwood and Sandile Keswa.

The only two women on the board are also the only two surviving members of the previous board. Dr Natalie Skeepers and Adv Nosipho Sobekwa were both appointed in August 2023 and will continue to serve.
