New Harbour Master appointed

Appointment: Seychelles Ports Authority

SEYCHELLES: Captain Jean-Paul Fanchette took up position as the new Harbour Master for the Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA) at the beginning of August and was presented with his epaulettes at a ceremony on 2 August.

Appointed as the Deputy Harbour Master in December 2022, Capt Fanchette has worked alongside the outgoing Harbour Master, Captain Avantha Herath, for the last 20 months.   As a qualified Class 1 Master Mariner unlimited, he holds an Honours Degree and an Ordinary Degree in Nautical Science from the Cork Institute of Technology where he graduated with a Distinction in the former and a First Class Honours in the latter.

Having launched his career at the Seychelles Petroleum Company Ltd (SEYPEC), he steadily advanced through the ranks on various Seychelles and German-flagged tankers operating internationally, ultimately achieving the position of Captain.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the SPA Board, Brian Loveday, emphasised the important role of a Harbour Master highlighting the need for, not only a deep knowledge of maritime operations, but also the ability to coordinate complex activities, manage relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and ensure the safety and efficiency of the port’s daily operations.

“Captain Fanchette will need the support of everyone, especially his colleagues as his success means success for the SPA and the whole of Seychelles,” said Loveday.

Capt Fanchette brings over 15 years of maritime experience to the designation of Harbour Master, having served in various capacities during his seafaring career. He served as a Chief Officer and Master on-board landing crafts within the Seychelles EEZ, worked as an independent surveyor on tankers discharging and back loading in Port Victoria, and lectured at the Seychelles Maritime Academy.
