Durban gets set to welcome largest maritime networking event in the country

SOUTH AFRICA: Organisers of the South African Shipping Gala are anticipating even larger numbers after welcoming more than 650 guests to last year’s gala which has established itself as one of the largest maritime networking opportunities on the calendar.

Quickly becoming one of the industry’s flagship events, tickets for the South African Shipping Gala on 13 November are limited and those interested in attending are urged to secure their tickets early.

Guests can look forward to a premium gala experience featuring world-class entertainment, live performances, industry recognition awards, Hall of Fame inductions, charity fundraising activities and extensive networking opportunities. The evening is designed to be both memorable and meaningful, bringing together professionals from across the maritime value chain.

“This year’s South African Shipping Hall of Fame proudly welcomes two exceptional women whose leadership, dedication and contributions have helped shape our maritime industry. Their induction is a fitting recognition of their remarkable achievements and the paths they have created for others to follow,” says Zenzile Gwamanda, Managing Director of the eThekwini Maritime Cluster, revealing that Michelle Phillips and Sandra Sarno will be honoured at the event.

“Their stories remind us of the vital role women continue to play in advancing the industry and inspiring future generations to pursue careers in shipping and maritime.”

The Hall of Fame remains one of the most prestigious elements of the Gala, and we anticipate announcing another group of highly deserving inductees whose achievements have helped shape the industry over many years.

Nominees for the Hall of Fame are assessed across several criteria including leadership and influence, commitment to mentorship, integrity and reputation. Ultimately the award aims to recognise those who have left a lasting legacy and measurable impact on the South African maritime community.

Organisers believe that this form of recognition is important as it celebrates the individuals whose dedication and vision have helped build the industry and preserves maritime heritage, inspires future generations and acknowledges the often unseen contributions that drive the sector forward.

With the objective of uniting the entire South African maritime community to showcase the collective strength of the sector, the Gala has succeeded in drawing attendees and sponsors from across South Africa including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Richards Bay, Gqeberha and beyond.

But the event is not only about pomp and ceremony. It also provides an opportunity for the industry to unite behind a meaningful cause. In 2025, the event helped generate R700,000 for the SAPS Education Trust. This year’s charity is still to be finalised, but organisers are confident that the event will succeed in supporting another worthy cause in 2026.
