Promoting regional cooperation to fight IUU fishing

ECOWAS workshop

CÔTE D’IVOIRE: ECOWAS states met this week to promote a framework for regional cooperation to fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the region.

Hosted by the Regional Centre for Maritime Security in Central Africa (CRESMAO), the workshop aimed to provide a better understanding of IUU fishing as well as to strengthen connections amongst stakeholders that could ultimately develop recommendations to combat IUU fishing.

The Director of CRESMAO, Commodore Richard Maru Shammah, urged experts present at the workshop for input on creating a set of working documents for the ECOWAS authorities. These outcomes and recommendations of the workshop are due to be submitted to the ECOWAS management and the relevant authorities in the economic region.

The ECOWAS maritime domain has significant resources that can improve the economic development of the member states, but faces many challenges.

Ourage Jérôme Wanyou, welcomed the workshop as a platform to propose innovative and effective solutions for sustainable fishing and the preservation of marine ecosystems.
