Strengthening regional cooperation in maritime transport

Kenya and Tanzania sign an MoU

TANZANIA: The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through the Tanzania Shipping Agency (TASAC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Recognition of Maritime Certificates and Management of the Water Transport Sector with the Government of the Republic of Kenya through the Kenya Maritime Transport Authority (KMA).

This agreement is expected to increase employment opportunities for Tanzanian and Kenyan seafarers, as well as promote competitiveness and mobility of professionals in the maritime transport sector. It also aims to strengthen cooperation in the development of port infrastructure, maritime transport safety, marine environmental protection, and the exchange of experience and technology between the two countries.

The event took place on Monday at the State House in Dar es Salaam and was witnessed by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, and his guest, the President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr William Samoei Ruto.

Through this agreement, Tanzania and Kenya hope to increase the efficiency of maritime transport services, facilitate regional trade, and stimulate economic growth in the East African region.

The agreement reflects the commitment of the Government of Tanzania to ensure effective management of the maritime transport sector, while strengthening international cooperation.

The signing of the agreement coincides with the visit of the Director General of the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), CPA Omae Nyarandi,  who was at the headquarters of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) in Dar es Salaam, to reaffirm cooperation between the two maritime institutions.
