Iconic reunion gathers maritime legends

Tug men reminisce

SOUTH AFRICA: It is seldom that such an immense gathering of tug and salvage talent is seen under one roof, but an initiative to organise a reunion paid off with many of the stalwarts of the South African tug history joining to “remember when we”.

Organised by Eddie Gabriels, who served as a Chief Steward in Safmarine and as a Purser on the tugs, the informal get-together lured many from their offices and even more from their retirement pursuits.

With the likes of Okke Grapouw, Dave Main, Ian Merriman and Nick Sloane amongst the guests – there were certainly interesting and diverse memories to share and people to remember.

According to Alistair Pettie, the group hopes to make it a more regular affair and to provide an opportunity for those who could not join this event to ensure that they can add further opportunities to their calendars.
