Future of green shipping calls in Tanzania

New car carrier makes maiden calls

TANZANIA: The newly commissioned car carrier, the Grande Shanghai, docked at the Port of Dar es Salaam this past week marking the launch of a new East Asia–East Africa service after departing from the port of Taicang, China.

“This is the first time our ships have arrived at the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania,” said Girolamo Carignani, speaking on behalf of the ship's management during a brief reception ceremony for the ship. He confirmed that the company will continue their service to the country in an effort to improve trade.

During its visit to the Tanzanian port, it unloaded 1,624 cars. Local stakeholders noted that the arrival of ship would help resolve challenges for car transporters, adding that the investment in infrastructure within the port had made the visit possible.

The 300 metre, 14 deck ship has a loading capacity of 9,000 CEO and marks the first next-generation ammonia ready vessel built by CMHI Jiangsu. With significant technological advances, the ship is an example of how the shipping industry is committing to carbon-free shipping.

According to other reports and statements, the vessel is equipped with:

● Ammonia Ready notation for future zero-carbon fuel conversion
● 5 MWh lithium batteries and cold ironing for zero emissions in port
● 2,500 m² of solar panels, smart ventilation, and silicon hull coatings
● Advanced emission controls meeting IMO Tier III standards
● An innovative “gate rudder” for higher efficiency and manoeuvrability (a first for PCTCs)
