The real cost of Hormuz tensions brought home
Seafarer’s remains repatriated
TANZANIA: The true cost of the ongoing tensions between the United States of America and Iran was brought home this week when the body of a young Tanzanian seafarer was repatriated to the country.
The body of Captain Mchama Maregesi Mongu arrived in Dar es Salaam through Julius Kambarage Nyerere International Airport on Monday. Mongu was serving aboard the tug Volans when it was struck earlier this month while sailing from the United Arab Emirates to Oman.
Speaking during the reception of the body, the Chairman of the Tanzania Shipping Agency (TASAC) Board of Directors, Captain Mussa Mandia, thanked the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania for facilitating the entire process of returning the body of the deceased to the country.
“We express our sincere gratitude to the Government for ensuring the safe return of the body of our fellow Captain, Mchama Mongu. In a special way, we thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the great efforts made to achieve this important step,” said Captain Mandia.
In addition, Captain Mandia has urged companies that own and operate ships to continue to adhere to international laws, regulations and standards for the safety and protection of seafarers in order to reduce the risks that may befall workers while at work.
Last week the International Transport Workers Federation called for a permanent ceasefire and condemned the “illegal bombing” being carried out as well as retaliatory attacks. Issuing a statement, they noted that the majority of injuries and deaths were of workers from the Global South.
