Recognised for leadership in global ocean governance

IMO committee chair position for South Africa

Advocate Radia Razack, the Acting DDG: Oceans and Coast in the Ministry of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has been elected as Chair of the London Convention and Protocol, the global marine pollution treaty at the International Maritime Organisation.

This election reflects international confidence in South Africa’s technical expertise, neutrality, and commitment to ocean protection.

The appointment means South Africa will:

◼︎ Preside over global negotiations on marine pollution prevention and dumping at sea.
◼︎ Help shape future guidelines and amendments to this international treaty.
◼︎ Strengthen the country’s role as a champion of the ocean-climate-development nexus for the Global South and African coastal states.

The London Convention and Protocol brings together over 90 Contracting Parties, as well as observer countries, international organisations, and NGOs.
