Offshore oil field aims to start production in 2024
Significant oil discovered offshore Gabon
GABON: Two of the partners in the Hibiscus South Well offshore Gabon have confirmed the discovery of significant commercial oil prospects on the Dussafu Marin Permit offshore Gabon.
Hibiscus South is located approximately five kilometres south-west of the BW Mabomo production platform from where the well was drilled to a total depth of 6,002 metres by the Borr Norve jack-up drilling rig.
Evaluation of well log data and sample analysis confirms that the well intersected approximately 20 metres of oil pay in an overall hydrocarbon column of approximately 26.5 metres in the regionally prolific Gamba formation which is productive at the Tortue and Hibiscus fields elsewhere on the block.
The partners plan to return to the well to complete it as a production well in early 2024. Preliminary estimates of recoverable volumes at Hibiscus South are six to seven million barrels of oil and in line with pre-drill expectations of approximately 16 million barrels of oil in place / seven million barrels recoverable.
“The successful appraisal of the Hibiscus South satellite structure represents a low-cost and low-risk expansion of the Dussafu production and reserve base. We look forward to rapidly bringing these high-value barrels into production,” said Carl Arnet CEO of BW Energy. “The result also confirms the significant potential of the Dussafu licence where we have multiple additional future prospects.”
John Hamilton, CEO of Panoro, commented: “The Hibiscus South discovery underscores the substantial organic upside potential that exists on the Dussafu Marin Permit offshore Gabon and is the sixth oil discovery to be made on the block under Panoro’s participation, representing an 86 percent success rate in the Gamba reservoir. In line with our infrastructure led exploration and appraisal strategy we will leverage the existing production infrastructure nearby to rapidly develop these new high-margin barrels cost effectively as part of the current campaign.”
The intention to drill at the site was announced last month as a measure to optimise the utilisation of a contracted drilling rig. The production platform, BW MaBoMo arrived on site in September after leaving a Dubai shipyard the previous month where she was converted from a jack-up drilling rig into an offshore production facility with 12 well slots. “
By repurposing existing oil and gas production assets we extend their economic lifespan, shorten the time to first oil while also significantly reducing the field development investments and CO2 footprint. We are very pleased to have completed the conversion project with excellent HSE results and only minor adjustments to schedule and budget in a highly challenging environment due to COVID-19, supply chain disturbances, geopolitical tension and commodity inflation,” said Arnet.
