Egypt all set to open IMO office

Approval for office granted

EGYPT: After approving the establishment of a Regional Presence Office for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region last year, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has concluded its search for suitable premises and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the country.

According to a notice published by IMO, the position of a regional coordinator will now be advertised to ensure that the office can open as planned.

Egypt submitted a request for the consideration of a MENA office in June 2019 which was given final approval in December last year. In January this year, the Egyptian Government sent a letter offering to host the new office inside the premises of the Egyptian Authority for Maritime Safety (EAMS), which is located inside the Port of Alexandria.

The proposed facility was inspected in February this year during which time a draft MoU was also discussed that included the objectives of improving institutional capacity-building and general maritime development in the Arab States in the MENA region as well as strengthening self-reliance in the maritime field at national, subregional and regional levels.

The final MoU between IMO and Egypt was signed on 20 July 2023 at the IMO Headquarters.
