UNRAVELLING FALSE BAY

Webinar

This seminar will provide an overview of research investigating marine nematode biodiversity and anthropogenic impacts in False Bay, South Africa, since 2021. It will explore what makes False Bay unique among the world’s coastal bays, with particular emphasis on its geographical position and the oceanographic processes that shape the ecosystem.

DATE: 24 August 2026
VENUE:  Virtual
FORMAT: Webinar
COST: Free

Evidence of how these processes influence benthic organisms will be presented, followed by an examination of spatial and seasonal patterns in nematode communities, their relationships with environmental conditions, and their responses to anthropogenic contaminants. The presentation will also discuss the potential of marine nematodes as indicators of sediment quality, the integration of morphological and molecular approaches, and future directions for developing nematode-based biomonitoring tools for South African coastal ecosystems.

About the speaker

Dr Buyani Mazeka is a marine nematologist specialising in biodiversity patterns, taxonomy, contaminants, and molecular analyses that complement morphological identification. Currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town and affiliated with the Statistics in Ecology, the Environment and Conservation (SEEC)
