Global salvage community congregates in Cape Town

International Salvage Union meets for AGM

SOUTH AFRICA: International Salvage Union members representing companies from China, Japan, the Philippines, Europe, the Middle East and America are currently in Cape Town for the 71st Annual General Meeting.

Welcoming members at a cocktail event hosted by Amsol and Smit Salvage last night, ISU President, John Witte noted that the choice of venue for the AGM was an appropriate one. “The Cape of Good Hope has a proud maritime history and provides services to ship traffic,” he said, adding that the situation in the Red Sea had seen a significant increase in vessels along the South African coastline.

“The region is busier than ever insurers have noted concerns about the risks of heavy weather,” he said noting the importance of professional salvage response capacity.

Also speaking at the event, Graham Dreyden of Amsol emphasised the importance of continued partnerships in the industry. “Tonight is about connections,” he said, adding that the inclusion of the Department of Transport and the South African Maritime Safety Authority in proceedings would help strengthen collaboration and support the industry.
