Namibia remains upbeat about oil and gas activity
Namcor provides updates on country’s offshore activities
NAMIBIA: Describing the Orange Basin as “one of the world’s most promising oil and gas regions,” the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) has highlighted current trends in offshore exploration, appraisal and development activities across several Blocks.
In a statement, Namcor, writes that the country’s oil and gas sector is advancing significantly and that notable progress has been made in the appraisal of fields like Venus and Mopane. They also highlight new exploration initiatives as well as ongoing development studies.
This comes after Shell’s recent decision to write-down $400 million on oil discoveries in a licence held in the Orange Basin.
Despite this, Namcor reports that there has been an increased interest from potential upstream oil and gas investors. In addition, they will continue to conduct inhouse studies to enhance their knowledge on prospective offshore opportunities – allowing potential investors to make informed decisions.
Block 2913B (PEL 56):
TotalEnergies, QatarEnergy, Impact Oil and Gas Namibia, and Namcor are conducting post-well studies and fast-tracking development studies for the Venus wells. Drilling operations for the Tamboti-1X exploration well are ongoing since it was spudded in October last year.
Block 2813A (PEL 83):
Galp, Namcor, and Custos Energy Ltd successfully drilled the Mopane-1A appraisal well, encountering light oil and gas-condensate. As part of the ongoing exploration and appraisal campaign in the wider Mopane area, the drillship has spudded the Mopane-3X exploration well location at the beginning of January 2025 and drilling operations are ongoing. The joint venture is analysing new data and conducting a high-density seismic campaign.
Block 2813B (PEL 90):
Chevron Namibia Exploration Ltd, Namcor, and TRAGO completed drilling the Kapana-1X exploration well earlier this month, but did not find commercial hydrocarbons. The operations, however, did provide valuable information on important aspects of the basin and Namcor remains confident about the future programme.
Block 2914A (PEL 85):
Rhino Resources, Azule Energy, Namcor, and Korres are progressing with the Sagittarius-1X exploration well, the first in a multi-well programme. The exploration well was spud on in mid-December last year using the Noble Venturer Drillship and is expected to take to be completed next month.
Block 2814 Kudu discovery (PL003):
BW Kudu Ltd and Namcor are committed to developing a gas-to-power project which will serve as a national strategic project to solve the energy need for Namibia and its neighbours. According to Namcor’s update, the joint venture will submit a field development plan to the Ministry of Mines and Energy during the second quarter and are already preparing for an appraisal drilling campaign.
Block 2913A & 2914B (PEL 39):
Shell Namibia, QatarEnergy, and Namcor are currently progressing with an extensive post well studies of the cores and fluid samples acquired from the Jonker, Enigma and Graff wells to improve the understanding of the reservoirs and expand that knowledge to other potential opportunities on the block. These studies will continue through 2025.
