South Africa extends commitment to maritime security

Mobilising against the threat of piracy

SOUTH AFRICA: The president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has extended the deployment of 200 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) involved in the country’s commitment to the SADC Maritime Security Strategy.

Representing a cost of over R35 million, the troops have been stationed to help counter the threat of piracy and other related illegal maritime activities along the Southern African coast of the Indian Ocean.

President Ramaphosa informed the National Assembly and the (acting) Speaker on the extension of the employment of the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) in various international obligations yesterday.

The extension, which is in accordance with section 201(2)(C) of the Constitution is for services in fulfilment of significant international duties in Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South African Development Community (SADC) Maritime security strategy.

A total of 1,495 members of the SANDF fulfilling the international obligations of the country within the SADC Region.
