Discussions to open Russian market to Seychelles' fisheries
Strengthening diplomatic ties to benefit the blue economy
SEYCHELLES: Discussions during a visit by a Russian delegation could strengthen maritime partnerships between Russia and the Seychelles as the two countries enhance travel links and diplomatic ties.
Maxim Oreshkin, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office of the Russian Federation, paid a courtesy call on President Dr Patrick Herminie yesterday in the wake of the Seychelles National Day celebrations which marked 50 years of independence.
President Herminie was the first President of Seychelles to visit the Russian Federation earlier this year in April.
Seychelles, which will shortly open an embassy in Moscow, has affirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Russia. The two countries are also due to benefit from improved air connections with the anticipated resumption of direct flights in July.
The President also pointed to emerging areas of cooperation, including space technology for maritime monitoring. He expressed appreciation for Russia’s continued engagement and optimism for deeper cooperation.
Another key area of discussion was the opening of the Russian market to Seychelles fish-based products, which is expected to enable high-quality Seychellois exports to enter Russia in the near future.
Oreshkin also commended President Herminie for his decision to participate in the Russia–Africa Engagement Forum in early October. Further discussions covered cooperation in digital development and digital sovereignty, as well as partnerships in energy, health, and education aimed at strengthening knowledge exchange and capacity building for mutual benefit.
