Funding makes global shipping climate talks accessible
Fund available to cover one delegate per qualifying member state at greenhouse gas working group in London
Developing countries, in particular small island developing States (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs), can now apply for financial support to attend a key meeting on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping later this year.
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has opened applications to its Voluntary Multi-Donor Trust Fund (VMDTF), which will sponsor delegates from eligible member states to attend the twenty-second meeting of the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG 22). The meeting will take place at IMO Headquarters in London from 1 to 4 September 2026, subject to endorsement by the Council at its 137th session.
The call invites IMO member states to nominate one delegate each for sponsorship. The Fund will cover an economy-class round-trip airfare and the applicable daily subsistence allowance.
The objective of the Fund is specifically aimed at providing financial assistance to representatives from SIDS and LDCs that are IMO Member States, enabling their participation in MEPC sessions and meetings related to greenhouse gas (GHG) matters.
Lowering the barriers to participation
The opportunity lowers the barriers for LDCs and SIDS to participate in these important discussions. The opportunity gives developing maritime nations a seat at a table where the rules for the next phase of shipping's energy transition are being shaped, including the measures that will sit alongside the recently agreed mid-term GHG framework.
For coastal and island states most exposed to climate impacts, the chance to bring national experience and priorities directly into the working group is significant.
Applications must be submitted by 19 June 2026.
