Cooperating for capacity building

TANZANIA: Discussions to cooperate to building capacity in the maritime sector were held during a visit from the President of the World Maritime University (WMU) to Tanzania.

President of WMU, Maximo Mejia, and his Deputy, Jens Henrichs met with the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) to discuss professional capacity building in the maritime transport sector during the visit.

Noting the country’s geographic position, TASAC’s Director General, Mohamed Salum, said that cooperation with WMU will help enhance knowledge and expertise among maritime sector professionals to foster national development.

“We have great opportunities, and we give priority to maritime education since our country has a vast potential with both the ocean and the great lakes bordering other nations,” said Salum.

Mejia commended TASAC for supervising maritime curricula through the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) and pledged to cooperate in capacity building for TASAC staff and its Board of Directors.

“We will be very pleased to collaborate especially with African countries, given the benefits we observe in these nations which demonstrate good governance in maritime affairs,” said Mejia as he emphasised the importance of strengthening WMU’s cooperation with African countries, including Tanzania, for the benefit of the maritime sector’s development.
