Cooking up interest in science and technology

Cook for a cause competition

SOUTH AFRICA, Vredenburg: The Cook for Cause competition hosted by ArcelorMittal Transformation Centre in Vredenburg last month aimed to promote community interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Innovation (STEMI).

Teams were invited to cook the best potjiekos in town and employees from Transnet National Port’s Authority’s Port of Saldanha rose to the challenge.

While the team made-up of Christo Titus, Samantha Armino, Sibongile Mbonyana and Willem Morris did not win, their dish did earn them a second-place finish.

Participating teams were tasked to prepare a potjie, enough to serve ±20 people. The food was then served to children from various community organisations that were invited to the event.

The ArcelorMittal Transformation Centre offers curriculum support and enrichment programmes for school learners and the community in STEMI industries. The organisation has also expanded its footprint to assist in eradicating youth unemployment as well preparing our youth for future employment through various collaborations and projects.

In support of the centre’s mandate, The Port of Saldanha also ran a careers exhibition at the event with actual marine employees present including engineers Akona Beda and Mudanalo Mukhuwana, trainee tug master Thembekazi Makeleni and Malithatwe Nombewu, Corporate Affairs Officer at TNPA Port of Saldanha.

“We were inspired to host a careers expo because the event offered a great opportunity for local youth and the community to learn about the multitude of career opportunities available within the maritime industry,” said Nombewu.

“It also fits within our mandate, under the National Ports Act of 2005, to promote awareness of the ports, maritime careers and business opportunities offered by this industry.”
